Dr. Jennifer Coomes, DCN

Doctor of Clinical Nutrition

Dr. Jennifer Coomes is a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition (DCN) trained in the functional medicine/nutrition approach with a specialty in metabolic diseases, metabolic healthcare, chronic and autoimmune diseases, mental health conditions, and general health improvement for pediatric and adult patients.  Dr. Coomes is a Certified Dietician & Nutritionist (CDN) with the WA State Dept of Health and is board certified in clinical and personalized nutrition with the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists (BCNS).  She is also an experienced clinical researcher and yoga instructor (E-RYT).

For those who have not heard of a DCN, they are trained clinical doctors and researchers and are clinically a cross between a registered dietitian (RD) and naturopathic physician (ND), ie. a doctor who is highly trained to do metabolic healthcare from a root cause perspective but without the scope of practice as a physician or PCP to "diagnose and treat" in WA state like an MD, DO, or ND.  As such, Dr. Coomes collaborates with the SAGEMed integrative medical team to help support patients with metabolic healthcare programs focused on diet and lifestyle change, empowerment, habit and trauma transformation, healthy detoxification, stress reduction, health maintenance skill building, and accountability to help patients transform difficult physical and mental health conditions with healthy and safe nutrition/lifestyle programs for successful outcomes.

Dr. Coomes has been a healthcare provider for over 20 years starting out as a medical massage therapist and yoga/meditation instructor and evolving into a clinical researcher and DCN.  She has a long history in teaching and brings a practical approach to patient care so that patients can be comforted in learning more about their health condition, the root causes of their medical condition or symptoms, as well as practical steps to take to transform physical, mental, and emotional health.  She often takes complex patient cases and helps patients sort through layers of difficulties to achieve results with long lasting tools to be self sufficient and empowered to take charge of their personal health.

Dr. Coomes has extensive training and patient care experience in diabetes care, metabolic syndrome (hypertension, hyperlipidemia/dyslipidemia, obesity, hyperglycemia), cardiovascular disease, stress management, fertility/infertility, menstrual cycle imbalances, hormone imbalances, menopause, osteopenia/osteoporosis, food sensitivities/allergens, emotional/picky eating, addiction, depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), gut/digestive imbalances (GERD, IBS, IBD, etc), acid/base imbalances, liver disease, migraines/headaches, memory/focus issues, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cancer prevention, and more.

Dr. Coomes graduated from the Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) as a DCN in 2023 which included clinical care training, a doctorate research project, and clinical residency. Her doctorate research focused on an extensive research review of the metabolic side of mental health conditions like PTSD and Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) so that mental health patients can receive more comprehensive medical care due to mental health conditions being high associated with conditions like MetS, Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), and more.  She also has master's degrees in Applied Nutrition (U of A, 2019), Biotechnology/Bioinformatics (Johns Hopkins University, 2017), and Clinical Research Management (Arizona State University, 2015) along with a bachelor's degree in Psychology (Depauw University, 1999).

As part of helping the DCN field evolve, Dr. Coomes regularly participates in legislative and community endeavors to help improve scope of practice for DCNs along with the awareness and acceptance of metabolic healthcare into standard medical care practices for chronic disease, mental health conditions, and general health improvement.

When Dr. Coomes is not working, she likes to have fun in nature, laugh, dance, cook, listen to music, enjoy the quiet, and hug.   She's thankful to be apart of the integrative and collaborative atmosphere at SageMED.
